A new sitcom about an unusual ménage à trois
Some guys have all the luck. Emun Elliott has just spent the morning in bed with Adam Garcia and has to admit, ‘He’s a sexy man. He’s hot stuff.’ It’s all in a day’s work for the (straight) star of the new sitcom Threesome. From the pen of (gay) writer Tom MacRae, of As If and Doctor Who fame, it’s the tale of hetero couple Alice and Mitch (Amy Huberman and Stephen Wight) and their gay best friend Richie (Elliott), whose spontaneous ménage à trois results in a lifealtering pregnancy.
Australian Garcia guests as Richie’s boyf. ‘We don’t get too saucy because we’ve discovered with sex and comedy it’s hard to get the balance right,’ says 27-year-old Edinburghborn Elliott. Plus, MacRae’s mission is to explore uncharted territory, not titillate for the sake of it. ‘The show explores the friendship between a straight man and a gay man, which I don’t think has ever been done on TV,’ says the 29-yearold Londoner, who hatched the plot while relaxing in a municipal baths steamroom with good mate Russell Tovey, the gay actor best known for Being Human.
He suggested I write something about a gay man’s friendship with a woman and I thought, “How could that not be Will & Grace?”’ Tom recalls. ‘The idea of them having a baby together came to me, and then I thought about the woman’s fiancé being in the mix, and it developed from there.’ MacRae adds, ‘It’s my love letter to friendship.’ He’s not saying which of the two blokes has got the girl up the duff but we’ll know by the end of the first episode. Should the show prove to be a hit he’s got two more series mapped out.
MacRae says he wanted to avoid stereotyping his gay lead. ‘Richie loves dick and boys and all that stuff, and he can be quite crude, but he can also be terribly charming. And he isn’t camp per se, but when he’s with his friends he gets a bit excited and starts talking about Lady Gaga.’ With that in mind, MacRae thinks Doctor Who might be the camper project. ‘I mean, it had Kylie in it,’ he laughs, then adds, ‘But then we’ve got Adam Garcia with his top off and spray-on tattoos, so we’ll call it a tie.’
